On Thursday night, Don Slack brings the best alternative country, honky tonk, western swing, bluegrass and other kinds of hardcore twang to Swinging Doors on KEXP Seattle WA.

Forget the boot-scootin’, hip shakin’ rock that passed for country in the 80’s and 90’s — this is the real old stuff mixed in with plenty of contemporary artists, of which there was no shortage in 2007. Here’s Don’s list for this year’s best:

Stagecoach, as the country cousin of the huge Coachella rock franchise is now named, will saddle up for the first time in early May with a lineup that is even deeper than previously announced: Alan Jackson, Brooks & Dunn, Kris Kristofferson, Emmylou Harris, Gary Allan and Neko Case have been added to the bill.

Those acts will join George Strait, Kenny Chesney, Willie Nelson, Lucinda Williams, Ricky Scaggs, Sugarland, Nickel Creek and others at the May 5 and 6 festival at the Empire Polo Field in Indio.

Stagecoach, organized by Goldenvoice, will be the weekend after the Coachella Valley Music & Arts Festival, the three-day rock and electronic event at the same site.

There will be four stages, 50 acts and plenty of variety, with bluegrass, "outlaw" music, L.A. alt-country acts, cowboy poetry, exhibits of western heritage, etc. Among the acts: the Flatlanders, Sara Evans, Raul Malo, Earl Scruggs, Garrison Keillor, Jason Aldean, Robert Earl Keen, Chris Hillman, Alejandro Escovedo, Marty Stuart, Ramblin' Jack Elliott and David Serby.

Chris Morris, the legendary music scribe for such publications as the Los Angeles Reader, Musician, Rolling Stone, LA Weekly, Los Angeles CityBeat, Billboard, and the Hollywood Reporter recently chose I JUST DON'T GO HOME as one of the 10 best records of 2006.

For those of you have seen David Serby & The Sidewinders play live - you know we have a whole bunch of new songs.

Well, we're currently putting those tunes down on another Edward Tree produced record.

We've finished the rhythm tracks (Dale Daniel and Billy Block on drums; Taras Prodaniuk on bass; and me pounding away on the old Gibson Advanced Jumbo).

Right now, Ed Tree is doing that bluesy, soulful, country thing he does so well, and we're lining up some old and new friends to help color in all the parts that need some color.

We're looking at a January 2007 release date but if everything goes right I might just have some advance copies in December 2006.
